A balanced diet helps us feel fitter, we are all convinced of that.
But can we spend our free time going to the market and cooking? Do we really want to radically change our diet, which in some of its aspects gives us real pleasure?
How to make healthy, balanced meals that will please adults and children alike?
Not sure…
Good news: it is possible to do a lot for our vitality without depressing our taste buds!
Dietary balance: the great forgotten of the century?
As you certainly know, industrial food, processed products and prepared meals have become a staple on our menus.
They are very practical! Food balance and nutritional quality are unfortunately not always there... and neither is vitality.
A balanced diet harder to achieve than before
For centuries there have been famines and serious food shortages causing malnutrition and deadly diseases!
Advances in science, agricultural productivity, and industrialization greatly improved our health and life expectancy beginning in the 19th century. However, after the world wars, the “plethora” of rich countries became associated with a greater sedentary lifestyle.
At the same time, cultural and social changes have appeared: urbanization, acceleration of the pace of life, family disorganization...
They have generalized the use of “fast food” and “snacking”: sandwiches, hamburgers, crisps, chocolate bars, sodas…
Results: a sharp rise in obesity and so-called “civilization” diseases (hypertension, excess cholesterol, diabetes, etc.) and new forms of micronutrient deficiencies.
What are the consequences for vitality?
If Hippocrates had a presentiment of it, it is now scientifically proven that food plays an important role in the preservation of health and that its imbalances ultimately promote many diseases.
We also know that an inadequate diet interferes with the optimal functioning of the body on a daily basis, causing overall malaise: overweight, fatigue, various small pains, lack of resistance to infections, depression, capricious digestion...
Vitality does not pass through a balanced and diversified diet as well as through the practice of physical activity. Your weight can be an indication of how fit you are.
To know if you have an ideal weight, you can calculate your BMI.
Less healthy foods, more processed products
Today, most active people do not have time to go to the market to choose seasonal products and cook everything themselves.
So even at home, 80% of the foods that the whole family eats are processed industrial products: frozen foods, canned foods, prepared meals, cold cuts, flan or cream-type desserts, biscuits, sandwich bread in sachets, etc.
What is an unbalanced diet?
It has a lot of foods to limit as they contain:
- Too much “saturated” fat (of animal origin)
- Too many “fast” sugars (sweets, sodas, sugars from industrial dishes)
- Not enough fiber (vegetables, fruits, cereals)
- Not enough essential nutrients (vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, etc.)
- Too much salt.
