Crying eye: understanding epiphora

Having a watery eye is often benign.

Some tearing is normal and necessary for the proper functioning andgood health of the eyes. Having tears in your eyes is even beneficial for natural eye cleansing.

Indeed, tears lubricate the eyes. Flowing tears remove particles and foreign substances from or around the eyes.

However, having excessively watery eyes can become embarrassing. Especially when the cause is not grief or laughter 😉

It may be a sign of an eye problem. It may also be a more serious health or environmental problem that needs to be addressed.

  • Epiphora or weeping eye

Increased tearing, called epiphora, occurs either because a drainage channel is not working properly. It can happen either because the eye is producing more tears than necessary for some reason.

Although not usually an emergency, epiphora can have a variety of causes, some of which require a doctor's consultation, diagnosis, and possibly treatment.

Do not hesitate to consult, especially when you have eyes that run often, become red. Likewise if you have itchy eyes with a feeling of sand in your eyes or if you feel itchy.

  • Causes of Weeping Eye
The most common causes of eyes that weep abnormally are: – obstruction of the tear ducts: the tear ducts do not evacuate tears well, – dry eye syndrome caused by dry eyes, – a eyelid infection or eyelid inflammation (blepharitis), – certain environmental irritants (irritation from dust, wind, cold, bright light, etc.), – a foreign body or chemical in the eyes, – an injury such as a cut or scrape on the eye – allergies, colds and sinus problems – rotation of the eyelids (ectropion or entropion) – a problem with contact lenses – a decrease in or dysfunction of tear production and increased sensitivity of the eye due to aging, – eyestrain from computers, bright light, etc. – an ingrown eyelash – conjunctivitis which is an eye infection – certain unsuitable prescription medicines (eg allergy medicine).

  • What treatments provide relief?
Fortunately, most causes of epiphora resolve quickly with time and proper medical treatment.

Common sources of epiphora relief and prevention include:

artificial tears (eye drops) to relieve dry and burning eyes,
– Massage for clogged ducts,

– the prescription of eye drops to treat the infection if necessary,
– surgery for blocked canals or bad positioning of the eyelids,
– sunglasses to protect against UV rays from foreign bodies and glare (photophobia),
– elimination of irritants,
– change of contact lenses, brand or type of lenses, or change to glasses.

  • dry eye syndrome
One of the main causes of epiphora, dry eye syndrome, is also one of the most surprising. It is a disease due to lack of tears or too rapid evaporation of the tear film, which makes the eyes sore and inflamed.

Indeed, paradoxically, dry eye is due to a lack of tears or tears of poor quality, which forces the eyes to overcompensate for tear production.

Examining the causes and solutions of dry eye is a great starting point for discovering the source of the watery eye.

I will add to conclude, that in addition to the typical solutions for eyes that weep profusely, a healthy and balanced diet as well as good eye hygiene are important.

Things like washing your hands before touching your eyes and not rubbing your eyes if they're already irritated can help keep your eyes healthy.

Thoroughly cleaning the eyes morning and evening with a cotton ball soaked in a lotion such as micellar water is beneficial. This keeps the edges of the eyelids, eyelashes and eye contour clean.

Of course, if the problem of the crying eye persists and is accompanied by other symptoms, it is necessary to consult an ophthalmologist.

Finally, regular eye checks by a specialist can help prevent the onset of eye problems.
